Voliero Rosso di Montalcino 2021 750 ML

Andrea Cortonesi’s first vintage of Voliero was in 2006, and he had started the label to make a wine solely for his restaurant. He is also the owner and winemaker at the Uccelliera estate, whose wines are always in high demand and low supply, so it made sense to start another label. To distinguish Voleiro but in keeping with the theme of Uccelliera (the name means “birdcage”), Andrea emblazoned the Voliero label with a feathered, flying woman. It is also a reference to the higher-altitude vineyards from which Voliero is sourced. The first three vintages were sourced from Canalicchio, but since 2009 the fruit for Voleiro has come from other high-elevation vineyards closer to home.
The 2021 Voliero Rosso di Montalcino is made from 100% Sangiovese from 15- to 25-year-old vines grown in clay soils. The wine was fermented spontaneously in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats for about three weeks, then aged in large Slavonian and French oak casks for 10 months.
Classic Sangiovese nose of dark cherry, flowers and spice. Medium-plus bodied, with beautiful fruit, earth and spice notes on the palate. This is extremely complex, and while great now, will also improve with a few years in the bottle. Stock up on this incredible value!
