The cheerful brothers Rolf (1937!) and Alfred (1935!) Merkelbach have been pressing classic Moselle wines for more than 55 years. The winery was founded in 1867 by their great-grandfather. Plants from an almost forgotten era of Moselle wine are produced at the Ürziger Würzgarten and Kinheimer Rosenberg locations.The vines, which are on average almost 50 years old (partly unrooted), are harvested plot by plot and matured separately in 1,000 liter Fuder barrels. The wines are exactly what they say on the label: a Kabinett tastes light and airy with dancing sweetness, a Spätlese like a Spätlese, suitably more intense and sweeter. The Auslese is delicately sweet and not overly concentrated.The two brothers recently gave up the rented plots. They also continue to work on just over one hectare of vines together with their 'younger' cousins ​​Hans Josef (1938) and Kurt Leo (1939). A visit to the winery feels like a journey through time, beautifully preserved and warm. The Merkelbach “Goedtje” tastes more current than ever and is the antithesis of the many uniform (sometimes hyped) technical wines.
