Highly fruity, aromas of candied plums and cherries lead the way, followed by earthy, spicier notes like cloves, bay leaf and peppercorn. The palate is somewhat disappointing. Light in stature, there’s less acidity than one would hope and a synthetic flatness to the fruit.

McGuigan Wines is a major Australian wine brand and one of the largest in the country by production volume. It produces a large range of wine styles and varieties in the Hunter Valley, and also has a cellar door in the historic Chateau Yaldara in the Barossa Valley. The wine portfolio of McGuigan includes Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay and Sémillon amoungst others, produced to suit a broad range of consumer palates. Most of the wines are set at value prices and include red, white, rosé and sparkling styles. The pinnacle wine is the Personal Reserve Bainton Vineyard Shiraz, sourced from a single vineyard in the lower Hunter Valley. The brand was officially founded in 1992, but the McGuigan family had been growing and vinifying grapes in the Hunter Valley commercially since the 1880s. McGuigan is one of several brands owned by Australian Vintage Limited, a large Australian wine company also started by the McGuigan family.
