The 2021 Martín Códax Albariño is a bright, coastal-influenced wine from Spain. It opens with notes of apple, grapefruit and apricot aromas framed by bright floral aromatics. This classically styled Albariño shines with a crisp minerality and bright acidity that carries through to a long, refreshing finish. Producer Information Martín Códax is a co-operative of grape growers in the Rías Baixas DO in Galicia, northwest Spain. It formed in 1986 and is named after a famous 13th Century troubadour. The winemaker and one of the original founders, Luciano Amoedo, was a key figure in establishing the Denominación de Origen designation for Rías Baixas in 1988. The signature wines of Martín Códax are dominated by the Albariño grape, which accounts for more than 90 percent of wine production in Rías Baixas. The Val do Salnés subregion is notably cooler and damper than the rest of Rías Baixas – significant because Galicia is known for its high rainfall where many vines are trained in overhead pergolas to due to high humidity. There are three flagship wines, all made from Albariño: The Martín Códax label is the classic Albariño expression, and is dry with ripe peach, high acidity and crisp minerality. Burgáns is a fuller, more fruit-dominant wine, and the French oak-aged Organistrum finishes with a hint of vanilla. On top of these, Martín Códax make a range of red and white wines from across northern Spain, from Rioja to Bierzo: all up, the co-operative sources grapes from around 1400 small vineyard parcels.
