Poggio di Sotto was established in 1989 on the South-East side of Montalcino. Since the foundation, the Estate has become famous for the high quality of the Sangiovese and has quickly achieved the status of a Cult winery. Located in Castelnuovo dell’Abate with vineyards from 200 to 400 meters above sea level, with steep slopes. The altitude, with the protection of the ancient volcano Amiata on one side and the river Orcia combined with the sea breeze from the other, result in a unique micro-climate making it one of the best areas for the growing of the Sangiovese. The estate, with vineyards located from 200 to 400 meters above sea level, extends over an area of 48 hectares, 20 of which are planted with vines on steep, south-facing slopes that have an average gradient of 10%. The rest of the property is a combination of olive groves and forest. Monte Amiata shields the estate, which is traversed by the river Orcia, from inclement weather and thus helps to provide Poggio di Sotto with a unique micro-climate in which to produce its famous Brunello di Montalcino.
