Loads of roasted chestnuts, glazed cherries, licorice and dried rosemary. Excellent depth and concentration here; think dried berries and forest floor. Tightly strung with raw, powerful tannins and lots of flavor. Long and chewy on the finish. Producer Information Michele Chiarlo is a producer in the northern Italian region of Piedmont, specializing in wines from its best-known sub-regions: Barolo, Barbaresco, Asti and Gavi. The winery was established by Michele Chiarlo in 1956 with inaugural vintages of Barbera and Moscato from Asti. The winery produced its first Barolo in 1958 and, in 1987, bought part of the prestigious Cerequio vineyard, which is informally considered to be one of Barolo’s “cru” sites. In 1996, Chiarlo purchased La Court estate in Nizza, the source of its highest-quality Barbera d’Asti. While the winery is relatively young for the region, Chiarlo himself is from four generations of Piedmont winemakers. Michele Chiarlo’s portfolio is broadly divided into three collections: Crus (generally single-vineyard, “icon” wines), Classic, and the Palás range. Wines under the Crus, or Icon, range represent the best wines Chiarlo offers and are only made in top vintages in very limited quantities. The four grapes Chiarlo works with are Nebbiolo, Barbera, Cortese and Moscato, with its range of Barbera d’Asti wines garnering the winery the most acclaim.
