85% Sangiovese and 15% blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon
Founded in 1935 by Gaetano Marzotto, Santa Margherita was named after Gaetano’s much loved wife, Margherita. In order to match the high quality of the iconic Pinot Grigio, the Marzotto family searched for the best vineyards in Tuscany and began to make this Chianti Classico in the early 1990s. Similar to the beloved Pinot Grigio, the illustration on the label is of the historical Marzotto home, Villa Marzotto that was subsequently donated to the town of Portogruaro, just an hour’s drive from Venice.
Santa Margherita’s Chianti Classico Riserva is from a single vineyard called Salcentino that is just southeast of the famous village of Panzano in the heart of the Chianti Classico region. The 36 hectare (89 acre) vineyard is divided into four parcels called Tordela, Mazzoli, Crespine and Paladino. Various Sangiovese clones are planted to match each parcel’s microclimate, though the clones all share the trait of having small clusters, which enhances the skin-to-juice ratio (increasing potential color and texture).
Dry, rich and rewarding. The wine has complex aromas of red cherries and plums with a palate that unfolds to berry fruits and licorice, framed by light toast notes of oak and finishes with a firm structure. This hedonistic wine is perfect with robust dishes like barbeque and grilled meats.
