Very odd nose here with notes of potato peelings, herbs and hints of melon fruit. Very strange stuff, with an equally unorthodox palate thats either love it or hate it for this one. Producer Information Gaia is a Greek wine producer with wineries in Nemea and on the island of Santorini. It is particularly known for its mineral, crisp Thalassitis Santorini wine made from the Assyrtico grape, and its flagship wine from Nemea, made from Agiorgitiko. The latter is a powerful, smoothly textured red wine with soft tannins which reaches its peak after 5-10 years of age. The company began production in 1994 with 10,000 bottles of Thalassitis. Since then, production of this wine has increased ten-fold, and Gaia now produces five wines on Santorini, including a vinsanto. These are made in a converted tomato factory on the waterfront. In 1996, Gaia bought an established vineyard and built a winery in the Koutsi region of Nemea on the Peloponnese peninsula. From here, a portfolio of wines from the Agiorgitiko grape are produced; the 14-18h rosé, the junior red Notios, the fortified Anatolikos, and the flagship Gaia Estate wine. In 2007, a new range-topping super-premium wine, ‘Gaia S’, featuring a blend of 70 percent Agiorgitiko and 30 percent Syrah was introduced. Finally, a modern take on Retsina, “Ritinis Nobilis”, is also made at the Nemea site.
