The estate was founded in 1960 as a cooperative of grape growers coordinated by the Land Reform Board of Sardinia (ETFAS). Since then, it has championed local grape varieties – the red grape variety Carignano, and white grape varieties including Vermentino, Nuragus and Nasco. The majority of wines produced by Cantina Santadi are regionally (DOC or PDO) certified, including the standard wines and the superior Carignano del Sulcis wines. Other labels in the range hold the more broad IGT and PGI statuses. The estate also produces a Grappa from Carignano pomace and a fortified wine from a blend of red grape varieties. All of the wines are matured in vats or stainless steel tanks before bottling. The higher-quality Excellence label red wines are also matured in French oak barriques and are aged further in the bottle for several months before release. The estate consists of several vineyards spread over an area of approximately 3000 hectares (7413 acres) in the lower Sulcis region. This coastal area boasts a variety of landscapes and soil compositions typically of sand, clay and limestone.
