Established in 1994 by Sue and Greg White, the company makes an array of mostly white wines under the Whitehaven and Greg portfolios. The latter label was created to honor Greg White, who passed away in 2007. The Whites leased a small winery on the outskirts of Blenheim and, after some initial success, were able to move operations to a new facility in Marlborough's so-called "Golden Mile" – a strip of vineyards and wineries outside of Renwick – where the winery is still based today. Whitehaven sources fruit from numerous different vineyards throughout Marlborough, from the Wairau Valley in the north to Kekerengu further south. The region experiences a substantial diurnal temperature shift, promoting a long growing season. Additionally, the vines are planted on sandy loam over deep layers of free-draining shingle, which reduces the vines' fertility, producing a smaller amount of fruit with more complexity. The Whitehaven portfolio includes a Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Grüner Veltliner, and a rosé. The commemorative Greg label includes a Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir while Samantha, a sparkling wine named after Sue and Geg's daughter, was released in 2018. The company also produces the Koparepare (Maori for "gift" or "contribution") label, a portion of whose profits goes to sustainable fishing and sea protection initiative, LegaSea. Mansion House Bay is another range produced by the winery.
