The esteemed Dupond Family’s roots and knowledge of the wine industry run deeply in Burgundy and the Rhone Valley. It all began with Antoine Dupond, who was originally from the Cru Beaujolais area but began commercializing his wines in Lyon and St. Etienne in the 1860s. When Antoine started out it is unlikely that he could have foreseen that his descendants would continue growing vines, making wine and exporting them all over the world in the generations that followed! \n\nIn 1880 Antoine’s son, Joanny Dupond, decided to expand his family’s estates from the Beaujolais Crus, north of Lyon, to the Cotes du Rhone. He established the La Renjardiere vineyard, which is situated in the area north of Chateauneuf du Pape. The 309 acre vineyard was originally a forest of oak trees that was called La Renjarde in the historical cadastral plans (a cadastral plan is a map that show the boundaries and ownership of land parcels). Joanny cleared the area by hand and personally planted the vines, renaming the vineyard La Renjardiere. The soil is composed of sand, clay and limestone with an abundance of round pebbles called “gallets,” a terroir similar to Chateauneuf du Pape, which allowed him to produce quality wines that were authentic to the region. The La Renjardiere wines found much success, not just in Paris’ high profile brasseries such as Le Select Boulevard Montparnasse and Le Gourmet des Ternes near the Arc de Triomphe, but also throughout Europe. \n\nToday, La Renjardiere is a large estate dominated by a mansion that was built in the 18th century with a Southern Italian architectural flair and is the name given to the brand, as some vineyards under the label are sourced from other areas nearby. Loyal Dupond fans gave the La Renjardiere Cotes du Rhone Rouge the nickname “The Red Stripe of Cotes du Rhone,” due to its distinctive label artwork. The label was designed back in 1960 and has been in continuous use ever since.
