The 2018 Rudd Oakville Estate Red has a stunning magenta and youthful purple hue. The wine's fragrance is perfumed, poised and elegant. The more traditional black cherry and cassis fruit that one find in this wine are complemented by intriguing green olive, cigar leaf, and violet floral components that they find throughout their 2018 vintage wines.\n Upon the first sip, the bright and luscious black cherry and plum notes consume the palate. Threaded throughout those fruit components are an inviting combination of cocoa nib and dried rosemary, elevating the wine's complexity and power as the wine builds. While the tannins are persistent and firm, the slate-like texture of this wine offers a smooth and elegant finish. While showing well at the time of release, this wine had plenty of time to develop and age gracefully over the next 15-20 years.\n \n Blend: 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cabernet Franc. This sports some richness, with warmed plum sauce and cassis mixed with a melted red licorice note, all while apple wood and sweet tobacco fill in from behind. Rich but focused, with nice grain and detail through the finish.\n \n Producer Information\n Rudd Estate is a Napa Valley wine estate with vineyards in two of the region's most notable AVAs: Oakville and Mount Veeder. It produces red wines based on the Cabernet Sauvignon grape variety, and white wines from Sauvignon Blanc, Sauvignon Gris and Sémillon. The estate was founded in 1996 by Leslie and Susan Rudd, after they purchased a property in Oakville. Since then, the Rudds have expanded the original winery and established an estate in the cooler conditions of Mount Veeder where the white varieties are planted at around 1500 feet (460 meters). The estate winery already featured cave wine cellars when the Rudds bought it, but they have now been expanded to over 20,000 square feet (1850 square meters). Temperature and humidity control systems have also been added, giving optimum conditions for barrel maturation. The caves are home to the Rudd Wine Library. The 78,000 tonnes of bedrock blasted out of them has been used to contruct the walls around the Oakville property.
