Pinord is one of the most respected companies in the Penedès region thanks to a tradition dating back more than 150 years. Despite its current size, the winery produces close to 5 million bottles a year and has remained an essentially family operation. It origins lie in the neighbouring town of Sant Cugat Sesgarrigues, where the Tetas family had the estate where it cultivated vines and the farmhouse in which the wine was produced. In 1942, Josep Maria Tetas built a new cellar in Vilafranca and founded the company. He wanted to register it under the name Pi del Nord but the authorities refused until it was changed to Pinord. Throughout its history, Pinord has stood out as a pioneer in the introduction of foreign varieties in the Penedès region and particularly in the production of sparkling wine. Today, Pinord has 108 hectares of vineyards on three estates in the municipality of Vilafranca, in Moja and Santa Margarida i els Monjos. They cultivate the white varieties Chardonnay, Macabeo, Xarel·lo, Parellada, Muscat and Gewürztraminer and the reds Tempranillo, Garnacha Tinta, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Thevisit, which covers part of the premises of the company, focuses on the processes carried out in the cellar, located in the city centre of Vilafranca del Penedès. In the first building one can observe the enormous 100,000-litre tanks in which sparkling wine is made. Afterwards, one pays a visit to the dark quiet of the cellar. This is followed by a visit to grape harvest reception area, with hoppers and presses. The visit culminates in the ageing room, where the wines age in some three thousand barrels.
