First featured in the 1846 Bear Revolt, the Grizzly Bear was featured on the flag used by American Insurgents looking to form California as its own independent country in modern day Sonoma Country. Their bravery led to the creation of the “California Republic”, which would in turn evolve into the California we recognize today.
