Blackberry and blueberry aromas with wet earth and bark. Sandalwood undertones. Full body, velvety tannins and a juicy finish. \n \n Producer Information \n Cape Mentelle Vineyards is a leading wine producer in Western Australia's Margaret River region. It is particularly known for its single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. This helped put Margaret River on the map after winning a range of important wine awards in the early 1980s. The top tier of wines also includes the Two Vineyards Shiraz and a Chardonnay. The Wallcliffe Merlot-Petit Verdot-Malbec and Sauvignon Blanc - Semillon come from the vineyard of that name. The latter blend is the estate's signature wine style. The range also includes a Grenache and single variety Semillon, plus a more modestly priced pairing of a further Sauvignon Blanc-Semillon and a Shiraz-Cabernet red. The estate was founded by David, Mark and Giles Hohnen in 1970 and is one of the oldest wineries in the region. Many of the estate's wines come from original plantings, including the estate's flagship Cabernet Sauvignon. Today it is owned by luxury goods company LVMH. Cape Mentelle was founded with just 16 hectares (40 acres) of vineyard land, but has since expanded to 150ha (371 acres) across multiple vineyards. Production was very much focused on red wines in Cape Mentelle's early years. The range of red grape varieties mentioned above date back to David Hohnen's early experimentation. In 1985 Hohnen established Cloudy Bay in Marlborough, New Zealand. After winning world recognition for its Sauvignon Blanc wines, he combined that variety with Semillon in a white blend at Cape Mentelle. This became a benchmark for the region.
