Forest berry, eucalyptus and wild herb aromas lift out of the glass along with whiffs of vineyard dust. Vibrant and poised, the racy palate features strawberry, sour cherry and tangy mineral notes suggesting wet stone.\n \n Producer Information\n \n In 1860, Senator Luigi Gravina donated about 30 hectares of vineyards to the Scammacca family. The land, located on Etna, is the same on which Tenuta San Michele stands today : this is how the Murgo cellars were born. A little over a century later, Baron Emanuele Scammacca del Murgo began the process of converting the estate into the modern farm which today is the heart of our business. With an eye to the future, he decides to exploit the potential of the Etna area which, due to the natural fertility of the volcanic soil and the very special microclimate of the eastern slope, is ideal for growing grapes. These are the fundamental elements that give our wines a unique expression, which is accompanied by a viticulture attentive to respect for the plant. In 1981 the first Murgo bottle was bottled and labeled by hand: the red Etna vintage 1980. After three years of aging on the lees, the first Murgo Brut sparkling wine was ready in 1990 , which today represents the strong point of our label. Produced from 100% Nerello Mascalese grapes, we were pioneers of the particular sparkling process of this vine. Currently the vineyards have an extension of 60 hectares, distributed among the three different estates, Tenuta San Michele (CT), Tenuta Gelso Bianco (CT) and Tenuta La Francescana (RM) and are mostly dedicated to the production of VSQ, Etna Doc wines and IGTs. From some vines of French origin, we also obtain interesting creative wines. The overall production of our cellar amounts to 350,000 bottles. Another 60 hectares are dedicated to the cultivation of olive and citrus trees, from which fruits we obtain our Extra Virgin Olive Oils , Murgo jams and other quality local products.
