Ruby-red in color, aromas of plums and black fruits complement undertones of pepper, tobacco, licorice, and chocolate. On the palate, zesty acidity and velvety tannins make for an exquisite experience with this indigenous varietal.\n \n Producer Information\n Librandi is an Italian wine producer situated in the town of Cirò Marina in the southern region of Calabria. The estate was founded by Antonio and Nicodemo Librandi in the 1950s, and today produces approximately 2.5 million bottles of wine a year. Librandi makes wines from both international and native grape varieties, including Gaglioppo, Greco Bianco and Chardonnay. The estate covers 360 hectares (890 acres) of land, of which 232 hectares (573 acres) are cultivated vineyards. The Cirò vineyards are particularly suited to viticulture due to the area's Mediterranean climate its and proximity to both the Ionian Sea and the Sila Mountains. The soils in the vineyard are broadly characterized by varying ratios of limestone and clay in loam. Librandi's portfolio of red wines is largely dominated by Gaglioppo, a southern Italian grape variety synonymous with the Cirò DOC. Indeed, this range features a selection of Cirò Rosso Classico DOC, Melissa DOC and Val di Neto Rosso IGT wines. Librandi also makes white, or bianco, versions of these classified Calabrian wines from the Greco Bianco, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Mantonico Bianco grape varieties, as well as a single Val di Neto Bianco Passito IGT wine. Outside of its selection of still red and white wines, Librandi also makes the effervescent Spumante Brut Bianco and Rosato, as well as limited collection of rosé wines from Gaglioppo and Cabernet Franc. In 1993, Librandi established a research vineyard in Cirò Marina to study and work toward the survival of some of Calabria's most obscure native grape varieties, including Magliocco, Arvino, Mantonico Bianco and Pecorello. Following the death of Antonio Librandi, the running of the winery is now overseen by Nicodemo Librandi alongside his sons, Raffaele and Paolo, and their cousins, Teresa and Francesco Librandi.
