It is a full-bodied wine, with spicy tones and many sweet fruits, but at the same time with an accompanying and refreshing acidity. The wood is felt all the way, but there is also a lot of fruit to give balance.\n \n Producer Information\n Kaiken is a wine producer located just to the south of Mendoza, Argentina. They produce a large array of wines, primarily from Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon. It was established in 2001 by Aurelio Montes, founding partner of Chile's Viña Montes, to capitalize on the popularity of Argentinian wine. The wine portfolio of Kaiken covers several styles. Along with several varietal wines in the Reserve, Ultra and Terroir Series names, Kaiken makes a prestige cuvée called Mai, which means "first" in the language of the Pehuenches, the people who first inhabited Mendoza. This wine is 100-percent Malbec from Kaiken's three Mendoza vineyards, aged for 18 months in new French oak and then for a further two years in bottle before release. The company's vineyards are all planted on the edge of the Andes Mountains to a range of classic Argentinian grape varieties like Malbec, Bonarda, and Cabernet Sauvignon. There are two high-altitude vineyards in the Vistalba and Agrelo subregions of the Luján de Cuyo. These have alluvial sandy loam soils with low yielding vines, producing intense and powerfully flavored grapes. In Salta, Kaiken's vineyard is found on deep sandy soils at an even higher altitude in the subregion of Cafayate. Torrontés is the key grape variety here, making a fresh, aromatic white wine. Three additional vineyards owned by Kaiken in the Uco Valley provide Kaiken with Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon. Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc are also found, planted with a bush-vine method of trellising.
