Sparkling, dark ruby. Opens on the nose with slightly smoky notes, of beetroot, then lots of blackberries, some blueberries. A bit rough on the palate, grippy, slightly drying tannin characterizes the course, brittle in the finish. \n \n Producer Information \n Villa Cafaggio is a Tuscan wine estate located in the Chianti Classico region, in the celebrated Conca d'Oro (Golden Basin) zone. It produces a range of wines under the Chianti Classico DOCG from the region's Sangiovese grape, as well as several Toscana IGT wines from Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The estate's documented history goes back as far 1408, when it was named Cahago ("enclosed field"; similar to the French clos). and was owned by the Benedictine monks of Siena. It had several different owners over the years, and in 2016, the property was purchased by ISA, a private equity investor based in Trento. The modern estate covers around 60 hectares (150 acres), around half of which is dedicated to vineyards. Over recent decades a major replanting programme has been implemented, and today, around 85 percent of plantings are Sangiovese. The top range is branded Cafaggio and includes four Chianti Classico DOCG wines: a standard wine, a Riserva, and two single-vineyard Riserva releases. Cafaggio also makes a single-vineyard wine from Merlot (Basilica del Cortaccia), and one from Cabernet Sauvignon (Basilica del Pruneto). Under the label Villa Cafaggio, the estate makes a Chianti Classico and a Riserva, the Cortaccio Cabernet Sauvignon and the San Martino Toscana IGT Sangiovese.
