Aromas of blackberry, plum, dark cherry, bay leaf and chocolate. Full-bodied with firm, grainy tannins. Vibrant, with a chalky texture and a chewy finish with spicy chocolate undertones. Firm and tannic. \n \n Producer Information \n Arnaldo Caprai is a leading Umbrian wine estate based in Montefalco in central Italy, and is particularly known for its classic examples of the Sagrantino di Montefalco DOCG wines. The estate was founded in 1971 by Arnaldo Caprai, a textile businessman. He bought a 5-hectare (12-acre) site in Montefalco and immediately began to expand his vineyard holdings. His son Marco Caprai, who took over in 1988, is widely credited with making the estate the top producer of Sagrantino di Montefalco. Caprai's most famous wine is arguably its 25 Anniversario Sagrantino di Montefalco, which was first made in 1993 for the 25th anniversary. The acclaim for this wine greatly increased the company profile and meant it became a permanent fixture in the portfolio. 25 Anniversario is aged for a minimum of 30 months before release, as is the other top wine, the Collepiano cuvée. Caprai also makes three Montefalco Rosso DOC wines. The standard and riserva versions feature 70 percent Sangiovese, 15 percent Sagrantino and 15 percent Merlot, while the Vigna Flaminia-Maremmana substitutes the Merlot with Canaiolo. Caprai also makes numerous Sagrantino di Montefalco and IGT Umbria wines, and a sweet passito Sagrantino. In 2012, Arnaldo Caprai was awarded European Winery of the Year by Wine Enthusiast magazine.
